Vancouver – Christmas Eve, 2008
Another eight inches of snow fell overnight and during the day in Vancouver. The Skytrain controllers were advising morning commuters not to travel downtown as there was no guarantee of a return at the end of the day. Indeed, certain parts of The Skytrain system were shut down. Air Canada cancelled all short- and medium-haul flights from Vancouver International Airport even though the runways were open. Rumours persist that the airline’s staff cutting measures have caught up with them during this difficult time. Many of Vancouver’s trolley buses were unable to run because the overhead electric cables were frozen.
Vancouver must be hoping that it doesn’t snow during the February 2010 Winter Olympics. Cancelling flights, closing down Skytrain, and reducing the bus service won’t be an option when thousands of visitors are wanting to attend Olympic events.
